I'm often asked this question: what are the keys to becoming a great basketball player?

I give a two-word response: hard work.

All joking aside though, hard work is a key component of success in basketball (or any other area of life for that matter). But a more detailed, useful answer is really in order.

I have broken down success as a basketball player into 6 broad categories:

1. Basketball skill

2. Physical ability

3. Confidence

4. Aggressiveness

5. Thinking big

6. Being in the moment

Let me go into detail on each of these items.

Basketball Skill First and foremost, you have to be able to play the game. From shooting, to dribbling and passing, to rebounding and defense, you've got to know the game, and be a good player. This is, it goes without saying, the foundation on which every successful basketball career is built.

Physical Ability In addition to being able to play the game, great players are usually exceptional athletes. Now, this doesn't mean you have to be the fastest, strongest, highest jumping player on the team. But it does mean that you have to be very mobile, very agile, have good hand-eye coordination, and have good endurance (among other things). Being a good all-around athlete allows your basketball skills to flourish and grow.

Confidence Having basketball ability and physical skills takes you only so far. Taking your game to the next level requires massive confidence, the belief in yourself that you can go out on the floor and dominate, each and every game. Look at the great players (Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kobe, et al)...these guys think one thing when they play: that they are the best player on the floor, and they are going to dominate the opponent.

Aggressiveness In addition to believing in yourself, you have to be extremely aggressive every time play the game. You may be a nice, quiet person off the court, but once you put on a uniform and get into a game, you have to be fierce and determined, passionate and competitive.

Thinking Big I coach a lot of players that doubt themselves and what they can do on the floor. Get rid of that kind of thinking. Don't be satisfied with what you were able to do last season, or last month, or yesterday. Set high goals for yourself, and think big...and you'll be amazed at how you are able to achieve more than you did before, just by picturing yourself playing better than you did in the past (picturing it, and expecting it).

For example: if you scored 10 or 12 points a game last season, plan on increasing that by at least 2 or 3 baskets a game. If you grabbed 4 or 5 rebounds a game, plan on upping that number to 6 or 7. Now, remember that scoring more points doesn't necessarily mean you are playing better than before, but you get the idea. The point is to expect more of yourself, set higher goals for yourself, and set firmly in your mind the belief that you will play better than you have in the past. Believe it, and it'll happen.

Being in the Moment Lots of players over- think the game. Whether it's psyching yourself out at the free throw line, letting a bad play compound itself and negatively impact the next play, or being hesitant to take the ball to the basket for fear of getting blocked, you can't allow these types of negative thoughts, or over-thinking to keep you from playing at your best.

The key is to be in the moment, be in the flow of the action, and let your physical abilities, and all the practice you've done take over. Don't think or worry, just play. These are the 6 main areas of success in basketball. Think through each of these, and really figure out a way that you can get better in each one. What can you do today, tomorrow, or next week that will help you improve in these areas?

Kids Activity - Table Shuffle Board

This game is a variation of the real thing. It is easy to make and very inexpensive. These are two things parents love to hear when dealing with anything. The game will give children ages 4+ a great time. They will have hours of enjoyment from this, and you will enjoy participating.

What you'll need:

1. You will need a table (perhaps a kitchen table or long rectangular picnic table as this can be done indoors or outdoors) or a concrete area around 4+ feet long. The area can be as big or as small as you want and will really depend on how old the participants will be.
2. You will also need masking tape for the table or chalk for the concrete area.
3. The next thing that you will need is some type of pucks. Each participant will need one and you can be color coordinated if you choose to have teams. We used small 5" and 3" plastic bowls from a kids toy kitchen.

Table Set Up:

1. Measure a 10 inch section from one end of the table and place masking tape all the way across the width of it.
2. Place a 10 inch piece of tape on the table to divide this section in half.
3. Then measure another slightly larger section and divide it in a similar manner. This will make 4 sections on the table and cover still less than half of it.
4. Assign a point value to each section with the higher point values on the smaller sections at the end of the table. Now you are ready to play.

How to play:

1. From the unmarked end of the table, have participants take turns sliding their pucks in an effort to make them stop in a point assigned area of the table.
2. LEAVE ALL PUCKS ON THE TABLE UNTIL EVERYONE HAS FINISHED.
3. If a puck knocks another puck ahead into another area it is now assigned that point value. Likewise, if a puck knocks another puck off the board the puck that is off the board is awarded no points.
4. The idea here is to add up all points after everyone has taken their turn.
5. If you use teams have one participant from each team take a turn. Then each round will consist of the same until everyone has had a turn.

But now, with social media and the Internet, kids can e-mail their Christmas gift list to Santa Claus. I feel certain that he has a lot of bandwidth on his server!(LOL) Having been able to view some of these e-mails, this is what I've come up with as some good Christmas gift ideas for kids.

The Modern Man - Cocky and Funny - A State of Mind

In the world of today, everyone has an angle. Don't believe me? Think again. No matter where you are, or what you are doing, there is an agenda there. You have one, he has one...even I have one; otherwise you would be looking at a blank page right now wondering what you were doing. The trick is keeping your agenda visible yet not obvious so as to avoid being obnoxious. This is especially important when dealing with members of the opposite sex. Let's face it, a girl doesn't want someone rude and crass...but she will go for cocky and funny.

Cocky and funny is not as hard a mixture to obtain as you may think. It's something that can be exuded in everything you do and say, when the time is right. This aspect in and of itself may perhaps be the most important one of all. Appearing both cocky and funny in actual dialogue, takes a certain frame of mind in order to maintain and control. You don't want to end up with your size twelve shoe in your mouth because you fell into the "just friends" category after falling into old habits. So, how can you accomplish this? Practice, practice, practice...and a few well placed lines.

Pick-up lines tend to run the gambit from cheesy to downright mean. The secret to success lies in finding the fine line between the two; or the land of "cocky and funny". You want to deliver a quick sting, potentially insulting opening line to get her attention, allow her a second to react, and then circle it back around to a compliment. Confused? Don't be.
